A Balance of Urban and Natural

This group project was for a studio class which delved into urban planning. The project involved designing a masterplan, which was based on learning to implement a large stockpile of site information and technical planning information. We also designed two precincts – and in our case the two precincts were the two halves of the site. Pawtucket, RI needs a new stadium for the Paw Sox, as well as an area for the audience to live or temporarily stay nearby as well as experience other activities. A close relationship to water was also vital. The site is polluted by past industry, and is currently an under-utilized brownsite. Our site was roughly C-shaped, with roads extending radially inward. The automobile use near the water is limited and the boardwalk and nature trails are designated for pedestrian use only. The radial roads double as view corridors, with waterfront vistas. From the main road bordering the adjacent residential area, there is not much new but the intention is to draw people in with the view corridors. Upon arrival within the updated site, your view is expanded further. You are met with an inner “C” road, featuring multi use buildings along it. One of the buildings is a hotel with retail and parking on the ground floor, event space, a restaurant, a gift store and private offices on the first floor, and rooms above. The others are all retail on the ground floor with below-ground parking and upper level residential space, each unit featuring a private greenspace. The residential units are terraced down with the topography and almost all have waterfront views. Past the commercial street is park space. Buildings are smaller, farther apart, and woven together loosely with trails. A picnic pagoda with visitor information greets you at the northern entrance. Near the middle is a foliated area with a small museum called the “Nature Center”. This building has a view of the water and pedestrian boardwalk, complete with boat rentals and bait shop. Just to the south, a playground is hidden in a grove of trees. Next door is the amphitheater, farmer’s market and community garden. The location of these last four features near the majority of the residential is intentional. The northernmost residential building includes bars on the retail floor and therefore it is the only residential building in the northern precinct, intending to draw a more adult crowd and separate it from the family-friendly area.
